The Great Hedgehog Bake-Off

As the month came to a close, we decided to have a fundraiser. The challenge: baking something in the shape of a hedgehog. Our goal was to raise money for the British Hedgehog Preservation Society. The best baking result would win delicious treats for the cute little hedgehogs in their area.

Ever wondered what hedgehogs like to eat? Their daily menu consists mostly of insects, but they also like plants, fruits and even snakes. Yes, snakes.

In the Middle Ages, people believed that hedgehogs carry and store food on their spikes. Unfortunately, this is a myth, although food sometimes gets on their backs by accident.

Did you know that hedgehogs are lactose-intolerant? This is why you shouldn’t give milk to hedgehogs. It is also advised not to give them bread because of its low nutritional value. Feeding wild animals is generally a debated subject, but if you have to feed a hedgehog, water and meat-based cat or dog food will be appropriate.

Those who are familiar with Netflix’s baking show Nailed It know how hard it is to recreate something as a baked good. Nevertheless, we all did our best and I think we can be proud of our results:

Just kidding – here are the amazing submissions we got from the many talented bakers who have a soft spot for hedgehogs:

Such cutie-pies (see what I did there).

As said before, we were to crown a winner. Voted number one were these wonderful bread hedgehogs:

We congratulate our champion, and we thank all the contestants for taking the time to participate in this fundraiser. Feel hedgehugged.

We managed to raise £150! This will certainly make a difference in some hedgehogs’ lives.
